Going, Going, Gone

I've had a love/hate relationship with the 4x4 Ikea Expedit shelf unit in my living room for a long time now and, in a frenzied moment yesterday, I decided to finally say goodbye to it.

Here it is, going:
 going:
 gone:
Now I have all of this empty space to work with as you enter my apartment.
I want my home to be comprised only of things I love, rather than place holders, and my 5-year old Expedit just didn't meet that criteria any more.  I want to create a welcoming first impression that represents who I am now--a bit more grown up and ready to invest in a piece of furniture for the space.

So, what will fill this void, you say?
How about a sleek console?

A skirted table covered in a fun ethnic textile?

Or a small chest for the storage of mittens, keys, and other "stuff" of entryways?

The possibilities are endless...but I needed to let the Expedit go before I could realize those possibilities.
Do you have a piece that you are finally ready to let go of?

  1. Love this post...and you can't go wrong with any of those 3 options! I am loving skirted console tables right now...so I always gravitate towards those images. You can always buy a sleek console or a great antique console and have a skirt made for it...so you can have it both ways...skirted when you want that...and an antique or sleek console when you want that option! Take care, Caroline

  2. I love how open this makes your space! How are you going to store all your books now?

  3. I love the Parson's console table! However, for an entry I have a chest of drawers that I LOVE - you can't beat it for storing all kinds of stuff you don't want to look at. You could always put baskets under a skirted table or console for that too, though. You'll know the perfect piece when you find it!

  4. I can't wait to see what you put there!! Your living room looks amazing! I love that sectional. Aren't you so happy with your drapes and sister parish chair every time you come into that room?

I have a really old Billy bookcase from Ikea that I painted and now the paint is all chipped off and it's time for a replacement.

  5. I can't wait to see what you come up with Ashley. I know it will be fantastic. I can see a skirted table with a cute lamp, place for keys and a nice vignette!
I have recently gotten rid of our kitchen table. Totally functional but I didn't love it. I replaced it with a vintage wood table with brass claw feet!

  6. It's incredible how taking down the bookcase opened up the room!

All three options are awesome. It'll be fun to see what you come across on the hunt.

Too bad I don't live in Philly -- I'd snap that Expedit up in two seconds flat for my girls' room. Are they horrible to take apart and resell?

  7. This must have been huge decision, but it looks like it made space for new opportunities. I could see any of those scenarios working nicely. Love the new lamps, by the way. Congratulations on 100 followers!
