A Home Fit For a Philadelphia Princess

Philadelphia is filled corner to corner with landmarks and, just recently, another was marked at this gracious home in the East Falls neighborhood of the city. Aside from its beautiful architecture, this home at 3901 Henry Avenue is better known for its connection to royalty as the childhood home of Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco.

An article in this weekend's Philadelphia Inquirer discussed the former home of Princess Grace, which was built around 1929 by her father John, and has just recently received a historical marker designating its cultural significance. The Kelly family was an important one in the city of Philadelphia, having their impact felt in politics, education, and athletics. The scenic Kelly Drive that runs alongside the Schuylkill River is named for John Kelly Jr., the actress's brother and an Olympic rower.

The current owner, who has resided in the home since 1973, has contemplated putting it up for sale in the next few years according to her daughter. Considering that many original details of Kelly's early life in this home still exist--like a growth chart in a hallway closet--this will certainly be a home that will appeal a special kind of caretaker.

The next time I'm in the neighborhood, I'll definitely stop to appreciate the sight.

  4. I have to admit, when I read the title of your post, Grace Kelly did not come to mind when I pictured a Philly Princess. ;)

How cool to have that bit of newer history in your town, in addition to the rest.

And how cute is that little slipcovered loveseat Grace is sitting on? Taste and style were hers from the beginning, it appears.
