Old English Pine

Meet Me in Philadelphia meetmeinphiladelphia.blogspot.com
I'm having a love affair with the warm honey tones of English pine and, as you can see by the photo above, I was lucky enough to bring a piece home and into our newly-painted den.
For practically pennies, I found this antique English pine chest of drawers at an estate sale last week. Something about the worn wood, dove-tailed construction and aged key holes felt homey and cozy. New pieces, no matter how beautiful, often can't deliver the kind of character that antiques can if you ask me.

I had been hunting for such a English pine piece for what seems like months, finding similar chests for between $600-$1,200. I held out hope that I'd find the right one, for the right price, with the right dimensions, and the perfect amount of age and I did on Thursday. I spent all of $125 and I couldn't be happier about it.

This chest will hold media and games in our den, where we plan to spend lots of time once the space is fully outfitted. If you're patient just a little while longer, I promise I'll be sharing much more once the upholstered pieces arrive and the room really takes shape.

  1. OH MY! I can't believe you got that for $125! I love teh look on english pine and that dresser with those knobs is beautiful. I would DIE to have that piece. I too have been looking but most pieces online have been SOOO expensive. I hoping to find a Sunday to go to the elephant's trunk show or brimfield in july! Great find Ashley!

  2. $125? Seriously??? That is the deal of the century. You have a charming English country house pine 2-over-2 dresser with turned feet. To protect the top, I would wax with a clear bee's wax. It's a beautiful dresser, Ashley. You did very well :)

  6. @Fran--I've been to Elephant's Trunk at least 8 times and only left empty-handed once. It's definitely worth a trip!

@Loi--Thank you! If I could trust anyone about the details of this piece, it's you. I'll go get myself some bee's wax now.

@Caitlin--Thank you! Yes, the trim is fully painted now and blends in with the paneling. I'm looking forward to showing it off!

@Rene, Linda and Karolyn--Thank you, ladies!

  12. Love this chest! Found you through TPH. I have a chest from the 1800's that is similar, I love it too. I paid a fortune for it and I'm so jealous over your find ;) What a treasure!
