Where Have All the Comments Gone?

Look, I'm not asking; they are. Paula, Elvis and the ladies of the Supremes want to know.

Okay, not really.
This is just my humorous attempt to touch on a vital aspect of blogging: comments.
(all via Meet Me in Philadelphia)

Blogging on a regular basis can sometimes take a lot out of the blogger, especially if you've been at it for a few years (I started in March 2010). My projects/home haven't been featured on major websites or magazines but that wasn't necessarily what I was after. I wanted to be a part of the larger, ongoing conversation about decorating our homes with an attention to style and budget, and I'm happy to say I feel a part that community.

Comments are a way of engaging in that conversation, to chime in, to share your opinions or experiences; but comments are also a way to add fuel to the sometimes-empty gas tank of the blogger. Before I make it seem like comments have all but disappeared, I have to gratefully thank and acknowledge all of those blog friends who readily share their comments on my posts--you all are fantastic and I adore hearing from you each time you comment.

I guess my hope is this: to keep the conversation here going as long as I can. Followers and page views have consistently increased since I started this blog, and that means the world to me, so I know people are tuning in. I'm glad you're reading! But I want to be sure the content on Meet Me in Philadelphia is engaging enough here to generate that back-and-forth conversation between blogger and reader that I really value.

Please don't be shy. I love opinions and, of course, I like hearing my projects and ideas are good ones (let's be honest, who doesn't?)! Don't be afraid to share your 2¢!

Thanks for reading, friends.  And I'm only partially sorry I had to get "Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?" stuck in your head to communicate my point.
'Til Monday, friends.

  1. I'm glad you've said this! It makes me feel a lot better as a newbie blogger(also in Philly!) I see the pageviews but no interaction, so I just keep making content.

  2. I have to admit that I'm one of those people that surfs the blogs and never leaves comments. I promise to comment more often!

  3. I hear ya loud and clear, Ashley. I'm always excited to get a comment or two. And when I see a notification pop up, I'm really bummed when I find it's a spam comment. Grrr. That's frustrating.

Just keep on keeping on. I get a lot of interaction on my blog's Facebook and Twitter page than on the blog itself, it seems. But as long as my ideas get out there and people feel comfortable enough to engage in communication about them, I'm happy.

    Happy Blogging!

  7. Hi Ashley! I enjoy reading your blog but have never commented before, so thought I'd chime in with a request. I don't know how many of your other readers are from Philadelphia like me (and Prippy Handbook, above) but I would love your advice on where to shop in Philly.

For example... what's the deal with the design center on Market - is it all for the trade or are there any stores open to the public? Any favorite thrift stores? Where do you buy fabric?

  9. I already commented but I am also from Philly...Ashley knows this since I bought something from her:) I would also love the Philly-centric posts but I understand if you have to cater to a broader audience. Maybe you could do a weekly Craiglist post with good stuff you find for us Philly peeps???

  10. Eeks, I am one of your commenters who's been MIA lately, Ashley. I know how awful that is, especially when you haven't disappeared from *my* comments. I so appreciate you weighing in, and I know I miss seeing and sharing what's going on with my blog friends like you. If it makes you feel any better, I have had zero time for reading/commenting on any blogs, even my favorites, which I suppose is what I should have known would happen when Ms. Emmy came along. Still, I know it's not fair and it sucks. I have lately started feeling like if I'm going to write a blog, I'd better damn well read and pitch in on some others, and I have to just find the time.

  12. I know! Its like a plague, no more comments. Its crazy. I think with Twitter, and instagram and how easy it is to just look and look and look that no one feels like actually taking time to talk. I have found the same thing is what I am saying. Also, its kind of a pain in the ass to comment, so I don't do it much.

  13. I hear you. I don't think people realize how much we value the feedback. Particularly for those of us who churn out original content. I think its just much easier to like a pic on instagram.
Are you still commenting a lot? I totally fail at this, but I know it directly relates to what you get back.
